It's the end of a fanfic era -- [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon just held its final event ever. It makes a lot of sense that the community's day is over, since there's much less activity in the Remus/Tonks fandom than there used to be, and (as with Calvin & Hobbes?) it can be a good for a good thing to end while it's still on a high note. But I'm sad to see it go nonetheless! At least Meta will always be there as a repository of some of the best R/T writing and art.

I did take advantage of the opportunity to write two new installments for Kaleidoscope. One takes place fairly early in OotP. The other one -- well, after starting it four(!) years ago and realizing I couldn't really finish it until I had figured out a lot more about what Remus was doing with the werewolf pack in HBP year, and what some of those "million times" might have looked like -- I've finally come back around to write the Kaleidoscope version of the hospital-wing fic. :)
  • Moon by Moon (2205 words | PG)
Last month, Sirius carefully explained to Tonks that Remus needs privacy after the full moon. But now...somehow, something has started to change.

  • Landslide (7600 words | PG-13/mild profanity, brief descriptions of violence, canon minor-character death)
Remus is so very certain that he is right to push Tonks away, no matter how much pain it causes both of them. And Tonks will never give up, not as long as she knows that Remus loves her. But the inevitable collision between the irresistible force and the immovable object takes an unexpected turn on the night the Death Eaters invade Hogwarts.

I was going to be all organized this year and do a 2010 Fic In Review post with writing resolutions for 2011. Maybe I'll still get there, but...not yet, heh.

So instead, at least here's some of what I've been up to recently. Two R/T fics for the Winter Hallows Advent at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon -- they always seem to come in pairs nowadays, because writing canon angst makes me want to write denial-fic AU fluff to compensate!
  • Sanctuary (3045 words | PG | HBP)
Tonks wasn't going to go to the Burrow on Christmas, until she got Molly's owl.

  • Confetti (430 words | G | AU, 2002)
Remus is almost ready to ring in the New Year when he notices that something is missing.
As always, there's a lot of great stuff at Meta from this event. (And I'm still reading, so if you haven't had a comment from me yet, it's on its way!)

And then, there's even Vorkosigan fic. A little, anyway. I was sort of feeling obsessed with this fandom before the holidays, and reading quite a lot of fic, and then I ended up writing a little Simon/Alys drabble for [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking for [livejournal.com profile] philomytha, an acknowledged master of this ship. ;)
  • Protocol (300 words | PG | Simon/Alys | Memory)
Simon makes an uncharacteristic slip, with unexpected consequences.

There's still a Winterfair (Vorkosigan) fic exchange going on at [livejournal.com profile] bujold_fic, for which I very much hope to write something, but work is closing in again, so we'll see how that goes. The posts for the exchange so far have been great, though. (And someone has even written for the prompt I submitted, but the fic is in Russian...makes me want to try Google Translate, lol.)

(Wow, I don't know where this week has gone -- I was going to post this on Monday...)

I managed to get another HBP installment of the Kaleidoscope series written for the Summer Hallows Jumble at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon. My prompts were Auror and Peruvian Darkness Powder, which you might think would be perfect for the hospital-wing, robe-shaking scene. But I'd already started that for a previous summer event at Meta, so I had to think of something else. Ergo: immediately pre-hospital-wing. (And I've also got a WIP that's immediately post-hospital-wing. So I'll have to get to the actual hospital-wing scene someday, right?)
  • To See Clearly (4293 words | PG)
Remus risks his position in the pack, and maybe even his life, in a final attempt to stop Greyback's werewolves from aligning with the Death Eaters. And it seems he may be making another last, desperate stand as well.
There are a couple dozen new fic and art posts at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon, thanks to the Summer Hallows Jumble, so I hope that anyone looking for an R/T fix will go check them out!
.
shimotsuki: shimo_default (fall)
Using my fall icon today (even though it's still nasty-hot outside), because this is, unbelievably, my last week before classes start -- the last chance to really focus on getting writing done, be it work writing or fic writing. Eeep!

I did manage to post a fluffy little Remus/Tonks AU ficlet at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon, for the Summer Hallows Jumble event. (I've got a longer piece in progress as well, another installment of Remus dealing with the werewolf pack -- fingers crossed that I'll be able to pull it together in time.)
  • Losing Things (705 words | G)
Remus finds he's been losing things lately, but that may not be so terrible after all.
Also, I'm a little late with this, so everybody reading here may know about it already, but I did want to help publicize the debut of [livejournal.com profile] chalion_ibra, a new community moderated by [livejournal.com profile] katyhasclogs and [livejournal.com profile] katyscarlett76, for discussion and events related to LM Bujold's Curse of Chalion series. At the moment, there's a weekly read-along and discussion of Curse of Chalion going on -- people are making lots of excellent points (and staying generally spoiler-free for later sections of the book).

I spent most of my New Year's long weekend (aside from a hike with friends, a dinner out, and a late episode of holiday baking) immersed in writing fic for the Christmas Cracker Advent at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon. It had been a while since I really sat down to write something longish and plotty, and it felt really good to do it...

Anyway, I came up with something for the HBP section of the Kaleidoscope series, where I got to work with my OC werewolves again. I felt sort of odd posting an angst/drama piece set in March for a holiday event, but this was the plotbunny my prompt brought! And it was a fic goal for 2009 to write another installment involving the pack, so I'm glad I had a chance to try.
  • What It Takes (4750 words | PG-13/profanity, reference to offstage violence)
Remus has been living with Greyback’s pack for months without making any tangible progress at all. Loving someone he can never have certainly does not improve matters. But one day, Greyback goes a little too far, and some things, at least, begin to change.
Then, just for fun, I wrote a fluffy drabble. And nothing says fluff like post-war denial!fic AU, heh. Not that you'd know that's what is coming from the craftily misleading summary. ;) As always, there's great stuff at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon -- I'm still reading, but I'm enjoying it all very much.

shimotsuki: kaleidoscope.jpg (kaleidoscope)
For once in my life, I actually finished a story for an event at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon before the clock was counting down the final seconds to the deadline. Imagine!

This was a Kaleidoscope installment I've been wanting to do for a while (not that I forced my Meta prompt to fit it, or anything ;P ) -- it's about Tonks's first visit to 12GP after Sirius's death and how she and Remus are dealing with mourning, and it's kind of a sequel to Friends. It's set right before Blindsided/Unattainable, so Remus hasn't had his epiphany about Tonks yet, but he's getting awfully close. And this was one of the scenes I absolutely had to plot out so that someday I'll finally be able to finish my version of the post-hospital-wing scene.
shimotsuki: kaleidoscope.jpg (kaleidoscope)
There's a new seasonal drabble/drawble event underway at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon. The last one was a lot of fun, so it's great to see another.

I've sort of cheated this time, actually -- I decided to post an excerpt from a "Kaleidoscope" update I've been working on sporadically this winter. It's kind of a sequel to Messages, in that we see the mirrors again and it deals with the dynamics of the relationship between Remus and Andromeda.

I'm not sure when I'll be able to finish the rest of this story and post it here -- work is really, really crazy right now, and I know I'm always saying that, but I really mean it this time, heh. (This is the first evening I haven't spent working since last Thursday, including the weekend.) But maybe having posted this excerpt will motivate me to finish the story. Especially since the title has nothing to do with this part of it! ;)

Porridge (PG)
( A soft knock on the half-open study door made Andromeda start and look up. )

The "Spring is Sprung!" drabble event at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon (which you might like to check out, if you haven't already -- it's been accumulating a good number of drabbles, and even a drawble) inspired me to write a drabble in the Warp and Weft ficverse. But then the drabble wouldn't leave me alone until I figured out how to expand it a little. I think it wanted to have slightly more of a point... It's still a fairly fluffy AU denial-fic in honor of Remus's birthday, though. ;)

Natural History Lessons
1345 words | PG

'Okay, Dad,' said Teddy. 'I've finished.' )
The Matthias who gets a brief mention here is an OC werewolf from Greyback's pack, first introduced in Out of Sight.

I finished my submission for [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon -- almost ten whole hours before the deadline this time. Imagine! I've only just started getting caught up with reading/viewing the other fic and art entries there, but as usual, there is a lot of fantastic stuff.
  • Messages (3541 words | PG)
Tonks has a lot to worry about as Christmas approaches -- her decreasing usefulness as an undercover agent, her father's fate as a Muggle-born wizard on the run, and the fact that her parents and her husband still don't seem to understand each other.
This is probably also a good time to try to get organized. Just what did I actually get up to this year?

Whew! Writing the fic for October's "Autumn Moon Jumble" event at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon has been a wild ride. It took me a couple of weeks to figure out what I wanted to do with my prompts, and then of course as soon as I had the thing outlined, I suddenly had a lot less writing time -- culminating in this week, when I had a work-related houseguest for three days, which was truly fun but definitely didn't lead to lots of fic writing.

Last night was the deadline -- at 3am my time -- and the guest had an entirely legitimate need to be on the internet connection, using my laptop, from nine until midnight. (!!!) I still had half a scene to write, and was almost driven to writing longhand (which I almost never do -- I think much better with a keyboard). She went to bed at twelve, though, leaving me to power through the rest of the fic in two hours, and then edit/HTML-format/post at the speed of light.

I'm just glad it did get posted, in the end! Even if I am very sleepy today. ;) And now I can catch up on enjoying all the new fic and art posts at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon myself.
  • Changing Minds (4980 words | PG | genfic with background Remus/Tonks | post-war AU)
The members of the Order of the Phoenix finally receive the thanks they deserve, but Remus finds that Harry is a lot more optimistic about the prospects for change in the wizarding world than he is. (Set in the Warp and Weft AU ficverse.)

The madness at work continues! I owe an "Eight Things" meme, and lots of comments on interesting posts, and I haven't even read the tantalizing, tantalizing Jumble post I know is waiting at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon. Let's hope that this weekend -- in between events related to the fact that my little cousin, whose diapers/nappies I have in fact changed, is getting married (!?) -- I will have a chance to hang out around the f-list a little more.

But for now: I was wondering if I could ask the Britspeakers for some help with slang.

The details )

Hope everyone has a great weekend, and good luck with the Jumble posts to all of you who are writing/drawing them -- hope they're going better than mine is at the moment. ;)

shimotsuki: grandpre_rt (rt)
Two of my fanfic writing resolutions for 2008 have been to work harder on plots and to try out writing OCs. One of the ways I thought about doing this was to write some of the HBP werewolf-mission scenes for the Kaleidoscope series. So I decided the "Beatles and the Bard Timeless Moon Ball" challenge at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon would be a good excuse to do this. But then I dithered and stalled, outlined and deleted, for most of the month.

Finally, last weekend, I pulled together what I had, and (it's hard to tell when it's your own project, but) I think it did more or less what I wanted. It's not that plotty, but it's setting the scene for some plottier follow-ups, and I did get to attempt some OCs. The idea was to introduce some of the members of the pack, and suggest some of the fault lines inside Greyback's organization that Remus may be able to exploit, while showing Remus being delusional about being able to revert to simple friendship with Tonks while he's away, now that he knows she loves him and he's admitted he loves her too.
  • Out of Sight (3658 words | PG/mild profanity)
As Remus sets out to join Greyback's pack, memories of his friendship with Tonks are his anchor to sanity. But there are certain things that both of them simply must forget, and time spent apart will let them do that. ...Won't it?
I also wrote a second (actually, a first...) submission for Meta while the werewolf fic was being stubborn -- a short AU story in the Warp and Weft ficverse. It was just something to have some fun with, and I did. :)
  • A Matter of Opportunity (2390 words | PG)
Remus is worried about Teddy, but Tonks is worried about Remus, and circumstances lead her to try something she's never done before. She can only hope they are ready for it.
shimotsuki: kaleidoscope.jpg (kaleidoscope)
.
Asking for Forever (5020 words | PG-13/mild profanity, cuddling)
A mere fortnight month after the relationship finally begins is hardly the best time to ask a certain question. But what if it's now or never?

CORRECTION: I posted this story at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon, but after the relevant event ended, I discovered I'd made a canon timeline error. This scene should take place one month after Dumbledore's death, not two weeks; please make the necessary mental edits when reading.

(Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] katyhasclogs and [livejournal.com profile] mrstater for straightening me out.)

Happy 2008 to everyone!

The new year has started with a lurch -- I got home from visiting family literally 90 minutes before posting closed at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon Monday night, and tomorrow I'm off again to a conference. For which my paper is not yet completely written (although I'm not actually on until Saturday, so I've got a couple of evenings to work in the hotel, heh). You may have noticed that I have deadline issues with fic challenges (see above re: 90 minutes -- and I still had to spell-check and format for HTML before posting...)? Uh huh. That's me in RL, too.

Because of the unfinished state of my conference paper, I'll probably have to take a few days off from reading the new entries at [livejournal.com profile] redandthewolf and, um, almost everything at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon. But it's wonderful to have so many great new fic and art posts to look forward to.

Anyway, here's what I got up to for [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon. It's mildly angsty with, I hope, some resolution at the end.
  • The Things We Remember (4725 words | PG/mild profanity, Father Christmas spoilers | OotP)
Remus and Tonks navigate the minefield that is Christmas and discover that sometimes the difficult part is not the giving, but the receiving.
To balance the angst, here's a drabble that's pure fluff, and it's post-war AU to boot (taking my denial fic By a Thread as a canon escape clause). ...Blame the Christmas spirit? .

(This is totally the wrong icon to use for this post, but I made it today and, being a non-artistically-inclined person, I'm feeling a certain sense of triumph...)

Thanks again to everyone who weighed in with menu suggestions for a Molly Weasley roast beef dinner. That was, er, essential background research for the latest installment of Kaleidoscope, posted at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon for the All Hallows' Moon Fic Jumble:
  • Unforeseen Attachments (3570 words | PG/mild profanity)
The Weasley twins apply their formidable research and development skills to the problem of Walburga Black's portrait, but things go wrong rather quickly. At least Tonks is there to save the day...only, now Remus is starting to notice just how many of her evenings she spends at Grimmauld Place.
shimotsuki: kaleidoscope.jpg (kaleidoscope)
Somehow, I've managed to collect a few dangling WIPs, alongside the eternally-in-progress Kaleidoscope series -- I'm still working on everything, though. I'll be finalizing and posting the concluding part of By a Thread (that sneaky DH-denial fic that got started at [livejournal.com profile] rt_challenge) as soon as I'm caught up with reading and reviewing all the wonderful new fics and art at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon.

For now, though, here's another installment of Kaleidoscope, also at Meta.

(Apologies to Ursula K. LeGuin for that subject line.)

I'm going to borrow a page from [livejournal.com profile] jncar's book and temporarily change the commenting on my journal to friends-list only until after I've read DH, so that random malicious people can't leave spoiler comments. Not that I'm likely to be on anyone's hit list, but you never know.

I'll probably disappear from e-mail and the web entirely from Friday evening through sometime Sunday or Monday -- whenever I'm finished reading! I usually read HP books too fast the first time through to actually catch all of the clues and/or red herrings. (Example: On my second read of PoA, I realized, "Hey -- we were supposed to be getting suspicious of Lupin! Missed that!") So this time I'm planning to stop after every chapter and take notes on what I think is going on -- so I can have a good laugh later at how wrong I was.

Also, I haven't had time to post proper links here yet, but I do have a couple of new Kaleidoscope fics posted at the Last Chance Fic Showdown at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon; there may be a third short thing if I get very, very lucky in the next couple of days.
  • Friends (PG/mild profanity, 3509 words)
Tonks has almost given up hope that Remus will ever see her as more than a friend—until Sirius steps in to do what he can for his friends. But no one expects the evening to end the way it does.

  • Clarity (PG/reference to offstage character death, 1178 words)
Remus grieves for one friend, wondering whether he will lose the other too—and whether he ever really won her friendship in the first place.
shimotsuki: shimo_default (Default)
Okay, I'm sort of blocked on my next fic for the current Jumble at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon.

I suspected I would have a harder time with this one, since I usually write character studies (or one- or two-chapter fics where whatever plot I manage to write is really just an excuse for some poor hapless characters to undergo an experience of my choosing so I can watch them deal with it). For this Jumble, I swore up and down that if I got action/adventure for my genre prompt, I would go for it, because I want to learn to handle more genres.

Well, I did get a/a. Trouble is, days have gone by and I'm still at the point of choreographing various scenarios in my head, waiting for that feeling of "aha, there's the plotbunny I'm going to follow." Nothing I've thought of so far feels like it's something that wants me to write it.

I've already had a look at the a/a writing discussion at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon. That was extremely helpful, especially the suggestions by [livejournal.com profile] jesspallas, whose a/a fics Oblivious and Imperius are some of my favorite long fics ever. So I've got some technical ideas I'm dying to try, but NO PLOT.

Here are some ideas I've been pushing around. Any opinions? Does anything stand out as something you think you'd like to read?
