Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] huldrejenta, I found out just in time about a commentfest for Dog Days of Summer 2015 at [livejournal.com profile] sirius_black (naughty Sirius -- the commentfest post image is rather NSFW if you click through).

Title: The Hardest Word (216 words | PG/mild profanity | Marauder era)
Prompt: "a subtle apology", optional R/S
Notes: In my head, this is genfic, but it could certainly be R/S as well.

Apologies were for the meek, not for the bold. )

Hope everyone had a fun Hallowe'en. In honor of the day, here are two ficlets (well, more like drabbles) -- featuring Sirius! Cross-posted from Day of the Black Dog 2014 at [livejournal.com profile] sirius_black.

Title: Vol de nuit (136 words, G | Marauder-era)
Characters: Sirius, the motorbike
Summary: The bike was pure power—almost as though the Muggles who made her had kept some distant memory of dragons.
A/N: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] huldrejenta for letting me know about this event, and thanks to the mods who made it happen!

Now that I'm finished with my Meta project and certain evil work projects that shall not be named, I can start taking part in some of the other writing events that are going on around LJ these days. So I jumped on the wagon at [livejournal.com profile] day_by_drabble with this:
  • Unexpected (380 words | G | post-DH AU, but not my usual one ;) )
Al Potter has a very odd encounter with a stranger in a Muggle bookshop.

And for any [livejournal.com profile] woolly_mittens wondering why the heck I'm doing Potter drabbles and not Hot Chocolates, I have to admit the wonderful Hot Chocolates posted on the very first week terrified me with their amazing creativity. Ever since then, on the few weeks when I've even had time to think about writing one, I've been too intimidated. But I'd better start stepping up for my team, so I hereby pledge to break the ice and post a Hot Chocolate this week. Even if it's really stupid.

Did pigs start flying? Has the eternal fire of the underworld frozen over?

...Quite possibly, because here is the sixth and final chapter of "All Will Be In Order." I can't say enough thanks to the readers who have let me know they were looking forward to updates, and to beta-readers [livejournal.com profile] jncar and [livejournal.com profile] duck_or_rabbit and honorary beta-reader [livejournal.com profile] jobey_in_error for all the insightful and constructive comments, and to [livejournal.com profile] hrymfaxe for the amazing Chapter 1 illustration.

This is the end of this story, but the first installment of "Kaleidoscope" will pick up right after this leaves off -- both projects are part of the same ficverse.

All Will Be in Order
When Remus Lupin moves in at number twelve, Grimmauld Place, he must come to terms with Sirius Black and a friendship too long submerged by mistrust, loss, and Azkaban. He must learn to work with Molly Weasley, who seems to be nearly as frightened of werewolves as she is of Voldemort. Clearly, adjustments will have to be made. ( Remus, Sirius, Molly | GoF>OotP | gen )

Chapter 6: A New Order (3970 words | PG/mild profanity)
“Be sure you pay attention when you’re working for Voldemort,” said Sirius, seizing the opportunity to vent his frustration at his favourite target of old. “Don’t forget whose side you’re really on.”

“I am hardly likely to forget,” said Snape, dripping venom. “I cannot afford mistakes when I am standing at the Dark Lord’s side.” His lip curled. “I understand it is you we have to thank for the housecleaning—such as it is—at this miserable headquarters.” The smirk grew. “Sirius Black, tied to Molly Weasley’s apron strings. Imagine.”

Sirius narrowed his eyes and wrapped his fingers around his wand.

So, I have this genfic Harry Potter WIP about Remus Lupin, Sirius Black, and Molly Weasley... Heh. It's only six chapters, but the first one was posted in May 2007 (!!) and the last one isn't quite done yet. Actually, I've been sitting on the last chapter alone for, literally, a year and a half; the last-but-one went up in February 2010.

Every now and then I'd haul that last chapter out and try to work on it. Some of the scenes are in good shape. But I just couldn't make the scene that's supposed to be the climax of the entire story -- a confrontation between Remus and Sirius -- come to any sort of satisfying resolution.

Recently, though, a couple of people have prodded me about finishing this fic (thank you for being interested!). And so, I've been thinking about that last chapter. I've also been thinking about some honest and deeply appreciated reviews I got from a reader a few months ago suggesting that there was just something missing in this story.

And I realized that the two problems were related. )

The plan now is to revise one of the already-posted chapters every two or three days, as time permits but fairly quickly. And then when all the revisions are finished, I'll give the final chapter a thorough edit and actually post it.

I revised Chapter 1 today. Most of the changes are in the final scene. As a teaser -- and an attempt at self-motivation! -- here's the modified ending to this chapter. )

I meant to do a round-up post of my entries at [livejournal.com profile] day_by_drabble for the April Showers Drabblethon, but, well, enough time went by that now there's been another drabblethon. ;) So here are all my drabbles (and ficlets) from the first two events.

This includes my first (and possibly only) attempt at Earthsea fic, which I'd always wanted to try...

When I posted my list of holiday fics a week or so ago, I forgot one! It's not the cheeriest of stories, but it is set on Christmas Eve.

This is a story that I originally posted at PhoenixSong in December 2006, and then revised for DH compliance and posted at The Sugar Quill in August 2007. (Thanks to betas Musings (PS) and Arya (SQ).) I even linked it at Red and the Wolf once, but I recently realized that I'd never actually archived it on LJ. So I'm sticking it here now, just in case.

Playing Hippogriff (1364 words | G)
On Christmas Eve of 1981, someone unexpected turns up at a play park in Little Whinging. Does Harry remember who used to "play hippogriff" with him at Godric's Hollow? And what will Petunia do about this intrusion into her well-ordered life?

'Come on, Diddykins,' Petunia crooned. 'Let Mumsie put your hat on.' )

Chapter 5: The Full Moon (3420 words | PG/mild profanity)

Author's note: Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] duck_or_rabbit, for a super-fast beta job and excellent suggestions. (Revised, September 2011.)
“Good morning,” said Molly, curiosity colouring her voice. “Where’s Remus?”

“In his room, resting.” A corner of Sirius’s lip curled into a belligerent smirk—a challenge. “Full moon last night, you know.”

“Oh.” Molly went pale. “I hadn’t realised.” She was unable to repress a shudder.

Sirius gave her a frosty look. “There’s really no need to be so melodramatic about it.”

“I’m sorry,” she said stiffly. “But you must admit the idea is quite frightening.”

“If you think the idea is frightening, try asking Remus how much he enjoys the transformation itself.” Sirius bent over the newspaper again.

Molly stared at the top of his head.

It was interesting doing this post, because there turned out to be more things on the list than I was expecting. Most of them are pretty short, though; the official count is eleven stories or chapters (1000+ words), eight ficlets (500-999 words), and six drabbles (100-499 words).

It's actually hard to believe that all my Chalion attempts are from 2009. It feels like I've known that world for longer than only one year. I also have to note that two of my new fandoms (Chalion and The Thief) were introduced to me by [livejournal.com profile] gilpin25. So much of this is her fault. ;)

2009 fic posts )
2010 resolutions? This will be the year I finish "All Will Be In Order," and it's always a goal to be working on "Kaleidoscope"; maybe I can finish the OotP part? I'd also like to write more Chalion or Vorkosigan, especially if there's a ficathon again this summer. And more original fiction, even if only a little.
.

I was just looking for something over at the Sugar Quill, and discovered that the fic archive is, apparently, no more. Even though I hadn't been over there in ages, finding it gone makes me rather sad. SQ was one of a handful of places in the online HP fandom where I used to hang out in the year between HBP and my discovery of LiveJournal, and I read lots of great fics there that may now be lost. [ETA: It seems to be back...for now, at least.]

Anyway, I had one fic that was only posted at SQ, so I'm putting it here now instead. (And I'm fixing the typo that got past me at the time, heh.) I entered this fic in the "Phoenix Rising" fanfiction contest through SQ, and it won Second Runner Up (i.e., third place). The contest prompt was a phoenix moment.

Yep, you read that right. Even though I have had about zero time to read and review fics for the last month (not to mention finishing comments for a certain discussion post that is now two weeks old), last night, instead of getting caught up, I sat down and wrote fic myself. My excuse was: I felt like my head was going to explode if I didn't write something soon. Heh. But I do have about three of y'all's new(ish) fics in open browser windows, waiting for a quiet moment, and I have NOT forgotten them.

And yep, you read that right: it's a Chalion/HP crossover. I've never written any crossover fics before, but this one was sparked by a mind-bending prompt from last summer's ficathon at [livejournal.com profile] bujold_fic: 'Cazaril, Severus Snape, and endure' -- which would not leave me alone until I figured out a way to make it work. The story is post-DH, with all that implies about Snape's state of existence, and someone else who puts in an appearance is Ariana Dumbledore. This is not part of my "official" ficverse for either fandom, but I had to give crossover a try... .

Whew! This chapter has been a longer time coming than I expected. I owe giant thanks to [livejournal.com profile] duck_or_rabbit for her beta work on this -- and for reassuring me that Remus wasn't being too angsty (yet).

Concrit is sincerely welcome, especially pertaining to timeline errors, plausibility, or continuity from other chapters in the story (...if anyone still remembers something they read months and months ago!).

All Will Be in Order ( chapter index )
Summary so far:
  1. The Perfect Flat -- Remus and Sirius negotiate the awkwardness of resuming a friendship disrupted by suspicion and Azkaban.
  2. The First Mission -- Molly finds the task of cleaning out a filthy house full of cursed objects much easier to face than working with a werewolf, and Percy comes home with news of a splendid promotion at the Ministry.
  3. A Long Summer -- Molly and Remus each learn that the other is not exactly what they were expecting, and Remus and Sirius finally talk about why things went so wrong before Voldemort's fall.
Chapter 4: A Few Surprises (3516 words | PG/mild profanity)
Remus has to take a side when Dumbledore and Sirius go head to head; he knows what he must choose, but he is only too aware of what he is risking. Meanwhile, Molly sees a few new sides to the Dark Creature she is so wary of.

Author's note: Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] duck_or_rabbit, for putting her finger on the places where this chapter needed something more. (Revised, September 2011.)
Dumbledore emerged from the Floo with a smudge of soot on the end of his long, crooked nose. "Ah, hello, Sirius," he said brightly. "You're looking well."

Sirius snorted. "I'll be looking even better as soon as I get out of this house!" He heard Remus enter the kitchen behind him. "What's the mission you've got for us?"

Dumbledore glanced over Sirius's shoulder at Remus before answering. "I'm sorry," he said gently, "but the mission is for Remus specifically."

Sirius scowled. "Fine." He tapped the kettle with his wand and it boiled at once. "Then find another one for me."

I'd been planning for a week to make a gleeful post tonight about how I'd finished off a work project (that accursed book chapter) that had been plaguing me all winter, and managed to post a fic at [livejournal.com profile] fandomfusion.

...Unfortunately, the book chapter is NOT DONE. *sigh* I can't imagine in the grand scheme of things it will matter all that much to the editor if he gets the chapter on June 2 instead of June 1, but I'm still feeling all bogged down and wishing it were over. One more day. Tomorrow I'm sending it in, no matter what.

At least the fic is done! :/ (And lest this make you question my priorities, heh, it was mostly finished a good three weeks ago, and just needed some final tweaking over the weekend when I was too tired to be working on the book chapter.) I'd been wanting to write another DH fic set at Hogwarts after having so much fun with The Sorting in 2007(!), so I was glad the [livejournal.com profile] fandomfusion prompts sent me in that direction.

Congratulations to my fellow deadline-stalkers, especially [livejournal.com profile] duck_or_rabbit, [livejournal.com profile] gilpin25, and [livejournal.com profile] hrymfaxe -- we made it! And you'd better believe that I will be celebrating with a big ol' dose of fic-reading and graphic-novel-viewing as soon as that book chapter goes out. Tomorrow. Yes. Work has been really, really busy -- pretty much ever since the winter holidays. I had high hopes for fic writing during my time off two weeks ago, but not a lot got done.

So this is neither (1) my new "Order" chapter, (2) a "Kaleidoscope" update, (3) my contribution to the Ides of March HP event at [livejournal.com profile] fandomfusion, or even (4) the tiny Cazaril/Betriz ficlet I'm writing as a challenge response for [livejournal.com profile] mrstater. No, this is a completely random plotbunny that took over my brain yesterday morning on the way to work, and has nothing to do with any of my "real" projects.

But posting something is better than posting nothing. ...Right?

Here's wishing the happiest of happy birthdays to [livejournal.com profile] duck_or_rabbit! I'm so glad I've gotten to know you, and it definitely feels like I've known you a lot longer than I actually have. Your insightful, quirky comments add so much to any discussion. I love the vivid and original language in your writing, and I always enjoy your take on Sirius, Regulus, and Sirius/Rosmerta. And you leave such supportive and thoughtful reviews!

I have to say, though, that meeting you last month wasn't as much fun as I expected. Because it was more. (Erm, that's a Gricean-maxims joke, for the philosopher of language.)

Let me add my voice to the chorus at the birthday comm that the amazing [livejournal.com profile] train_lindz has set up, [livejournal.com profile] duckbirthday, to wish you many happy returns and leave you a Sirius double-drabble (200 words, G).

[livejournal.com profile] hrymfaxe has done an amazing watercolor illustration for Chapter 1 of "All Will Be In Order," where Remus is philosophizing over his used teabag. I am incredibly excited to have been given an illustration for a story -- and [livejournal.com profile] hrymfaxe has absolutely seen right inside my head to draw/paint this.

You can see her art post here. And she has kindly allowed me to insert the image right into the chapter, so you can see the Greatly Improved Ch 1 here.

Thank you so much, [livejournal.com profile] hrymfaxe!

Whew! Writing the fic for October's "Autumn Moon Jumble" event at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon has been a wild ride. It took me a couple of weeks to figure out what I wanted to do with my prompts, and then of course as soon as I had the thing outlined, I suddenly had a lot less writing time -- culminating in this week, when I had a work-related houseguest for three days, which was truly fun but definitely didn't lead to lots of fic writing.

Last night was the deadline -- at 3am my time -- and the guest had an entirely legitimate need to be on the internet connection, using my laptop, from nine until midnight. (!!!) I still had half a scene to write, and was almost driven to writing longhand (which I almost never do -- I think much better with a keyboard). She went to bed at twelve, though, leaving me to power through the rest of the fic in two hours, and then edit/HTML-format/post at the speed of light.

I'm just glad it did get posted, in the end! Even if I am very sleepy today. ;) And now I can catch up on enjoying all the new fic and art posts at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon myself.
