So, I have this genfic Harry Potter WIP about Remus Lupin, Sirius Black, and Molly Weasley... Heh. It's only six chapters, but the first one was posted in May 2007 (!!) and the last one isn't quite done yet. Actually, I've been sitting on the last chapter alone for, literally, a year and a half; the last-but-one went up in February 2010.

Every now and then I'd haul that last chapter out and try to work on it. Some of the scenes are in good shape. But I just couldn't make the scene that's supposed to be the climax of the entire story -- a confrontation between Remus and Sirius -- come to any sort of satisfying resolution.

Recently, though, a couple of people have prodded me about finishing this fic (thank you for being interested!). And so, I've been thinking about that last chapter. I've also been thinking about some honest and deeply appreciated reviews I got from a reader a few months ago suggesting that there was just something missing in this story.

And I realized that the two problems were related. )

The plan now is to revise one of the already-posted chapters every two or three days, as time permits but fairly quickly. And then when all the revisions are finished, I'll give the final chapter a thorough edit and actually post it.

I revised Chapter 1 today. Most of the changes are in the final scene. As a teaser -- and an attempt at self-motivation! -- here's the modified ending to this chapter. )

LJ seems to be working now. ...Mostly. So I thought I'd stretch it a little and post a poll, heh.

Seriously, there's something that's been a sticking point for me in working out Kaleidoscope (my Remus/Tonks fic series), and that is how to incorporate Tonks's "tea and sympathy" scene with Molly at the Burrow. The Tonks in my head isn't the type to mope or pine just because she can't have the man she wants, so I think there's more than that going on (frustration, anger, worry). But then for this reason, I feel like the beginning of HBP is too early in the timeline for Tonks to have given up on her chances with Remus -- not to mention that there need to be that "million times" when they argue.

So I've written a piece for [livejournal.com profile] day_by_drabble where I try to flesh out what is going on with Tonks in that scene from HBP, and I would love some feedback on whether it works for (a) canon Tonks and (b) Kaleidoscope Tonks (if you've been reading the series).

The drabble: Invitation (326 words | PG, mild profanity)

shimotsuki: kaleidoscope.jpg (kaleidoscope)
As much fun as I've been having with Chalion and Vorkosigan fics and all lately, I really do think of my Remus/Tonks series Kaleidoscope as my main fic project -- and yet it's been ages since I've managed an update. This summer I've been poking away at a major expansion and rewrite of "Blindsided," which was one of the earliest R/T drabbles I'd written, but it's going horribly...I keep rewriting and rewriting and I just can't make it work. (I need to have Remus grieving for Sirius and worrying about Greyback and falling for Tonks all at the same time, and he will not cooperate, darn him.)

So, partly inspired by [livejournal.com profile] katyscarlett76's posting her bittersweet Tonks drabble today, I thought I would shake off the jinx by making myself sit down and get started on an entirely different piece of the series, and post the first scene as a drabble. This installment doesn't even have a title yet, but the idea has been in my head for a couple of years, and I've known all along it would be from Arthur's POV -- Molly's had her say, and now it's his turn!

In celebration of the fact that I'm taking tonight off (whee!) and that I finally finished my 2010 fic-in-review post (discovering, along the way, that my 2009 fic-in-review post was apparently likewise finished in April 2010), I'm irresponsibly borrowing this meme from [livejournal.com profile] avanti_90 and [livejournal.com profile] philomytha.

Maybe this will wake the muses up, because classes are over in just two more weeks and I do hope can get some longer pieces done in the near future!

Post a single sentence from each WIP you have (or as many as you want to pick). No context, no explanations. No more than one sentence! )

shimotsuki: kaleidoscope.jpg (kaleidoscope)
I guess it must really be summer, if I'm posting fic! Heh. It has been a while.

Anyway, this is a Kaleidoscope installment from early in DH. As always, it's intended to stand on its own, but for people who are keeping track of the series, it picks up an hour or so after the end of All That I Am.

Moving Forward (2847 words | PG-13/intimate situations)
Remus has come home, but Tonks needs to work out how they can fit themselves together again.

Whew! This chapter has been a longer time coming than I expected. I owe giant thanks to [livejournal.com profile] duck_or_rabbit for her beta work on this -- and for reassuring me that Remus wasn't being too angsty (yet).

Concrit is sincerely welcome, especially pertaining to timeline errors, plausibility, or continuity from other chapters in the story (...if anyone still remembers something they read months and months ago!).

All Will Be in Order ( chapter index )
Summary so far:
  1. The Perfect Flat -- Remus and Sirius negotiate the awkwardness of resuming a friendship disrupted by suspicion and Azkaban.
  2. The First Mission -- Molly finds the task of cleaning out a filthy house full of cursed objects much easier to face than working with a werewolf, and Percy comes home with news of a splendid promotion at the Ministry.
  3. A Long Summer -- Molly and Remus each learn that the other is not exactly what they were expecting, and Remus and Sirius finally talk about why things went so wrong before Voldemort's fall.
Chapter 4: A Few Surprises (3516 words | PG/mild profanity)
Remus has to take a side when Dumbledore and Sirius go head to head; he knows what he must choose, but he is only too aware of what he is risking. Meanwhile, Molly sees a few new sides to the Dark Creature she is so wary of.

There's a new seasonal drabble/drawble event underway at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon. The last one was a lot of fun, so it's great to see another.

I've sort of cheated this time, actually -- I decided to post an excerpt from a "Kaleidoscope" update I've been working on sporadically this winter. It's kind of a sequel to Messages, in that we see the mirrors again and it deals with the dynamics of the relationship between Remus and Andromeda.

I'm not sure when I'll be able to finish the rest of this story and post it here -- work is really, really crazy right now, and I know I'm always saying that, but I really mean it this time, heh. (This is the first evening I haven't spent working since last Thursday, including the weekend.) But maybe having posted this excerpt will motivate me to finish the story. Especially since the title has nothing to do with this part of it! ;)

I finished my submission for [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon -- almost ten whole hours before the deadline this time. Imagine! I've only just started getting caught up with reading/viewing the other fic and art entries there, but as usual, there is a lot of fantastic stuff.
  • Messages (3541 words | PG)
Tonks has a lot to worry about as Christmas approaches -- her decreasing usefulness as an undercover agent, her father's fate as a Muggle-born wizard on the run, and the fact that her parents and her husband still don't seem to understand each other.
This is probably also a good time to try to get organized. Just what did I actually get up to this year?

Well, I obviously didn't make my self-imposed deadline of last weekend, but at least I finished this (just barely) before posting opens for the Jumble at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon on Friday.

Concrit is sincerely welcome, especially pertaining to timeline errors, plausibility, or continuity from other chapters in the story (...if anyone still remembers something they read months and months ago!).

All Will Be in Order -- Chapter 3: A Long Summer
(5359 words | PG/mild profanity)
Author's note: Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] katyhasclogs for help with British food culture. (Additional notes are at the end of the chapter.)
Sirius tipped his head back, closed his eyes, and let the liquor slide down his throat, burning all the way. He sat still for a moment and waited for the tingle in his hands and feet that spoke of really good firewhisky, well aged.

Sighing in blessed relief, he looked up to find Remus watching him, eyes twinkling in his tired, slightly grimy face.

    "That bad, eh?"

"Gah." Sirius poured himself another three fingers. "Mages preserve us from that woman!"

I've been bound and determined to finish chapter 3 of "All Will Be In Order" before the new Jumble gets going at Meta. But work has been really, really hectic the last couple of weeks, so I've been spending my (short) evenings lying around going "Nnnnngggghh" instead of making progress on fic projects.

So now I'm going to try a new tactic: public declaration of intent followed by shame and bitter self-recrimination (hello there, inner Remus!) if I fail. I hereby post a chapter 3 teaser and announce that the whole chapter will be posted by the first weekend in October. It will! Indeed!

Somehow, I've managed to collect a few dangling WIPs, alongside the eternally-in-progress Kaleidoscope series -- I'm still working on everything, though. I'll be finalizing and posting the concluding part of By a Thread (that sneaky DH-denial fic that got started at [livejournal.com profile] rt_challenge) as soon as I'm caught up with reading and reviewing all the wonderful new fics and art at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon.

For now, though, here's another installment of Kaleidoscope, also at Meta.

Asking for Forever (5020 words | PG-13/mild profanity, cuddling | DH spoilers)
A mere fortnight after the relationship finally begins is hardly the best time to ask a certain question. But what if it's now or never?
.
shimotsuki: grandpre_rt (rt)
Since reading DH, I've been making myself feel better by working on both a canon-compliant peaceful!afterlife fic and, yes, I admit it, a canon-denial AU fic. I enjoy other people's AU fics just fine, so I don't know why I feel weird about writing one of my own, but ... I do. So I wasn't sure if I would even be willing to post it where, you know, people could actually see it.

But then I noticed a couple of prompts at this month's [livejournal.com profile] rt_challenge that make for an irresistible combination: cheat and the end. How can you not want to run off and write a canon-denial fic when you see that?

So here it is:
By a Thread (2437 words | PG/profanity, reference to offstage violence; DH spoilers; AU)
After the Battle of Hogwarts, Remus has a choice to make.
Thanks to my beta, [livejournal.com profile] jncar, for excellent ideas and moral support.

Unfortunately, this is part 1 of 2, and part 2 won't be done in time for [livejournal.com profile] rt_challenge. But I'm still working full-speed ahead ('course, for me, that's five miles an hour) on this story, and I fully expect to have the second part done in the next week or two.
shimotsuki: kaleidoscope.jpg (kaleidoscope)
So the thing is, I started (sporadically) working on my Grand Saga of R/T a full year ago, intending to write a multi-chaptered, internally coherent fic about how Remus and Tonks meet, agonize, and finally get together. It was the first major fanfic plan I ever hatched, even though I've written and posted (several!) other things since starting this eternal WIP.

But then last January I started posting parts of the Grand Saga, and/or writing up parts of it especially to post, at [livejournal.com profile] rt_challenge. Okay, fine, think of them as teasers, and incorporate them back into the coherent chaptered thing at a later time, right? Sure.

Only, then came the spring challenges at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon. Now I've got R/T stories that are part of the same time period (and character development trajectory) as the Grand Saga, but for POV reasons they can't be anything but stand-alone pieces. Hrmm. And meanwhile, I've been coming to the conclusion that I may be more cut out for ficlets and one-shots than large fics, at least given my current opportunities for writing.

Then it hit me: I should do the Grand Saga as a series! Then I can write up and even post pieces of it out of order, as inspiration strikes or challenge prompts become relevant. And I can indulge my love of short fics while still making progress on my overall story arc. Ah...I feel so free...

So, let me present: Kaleidoscope. There's nothing new there yet (except for its Official Status as a Series), but the ficlets I'm working on for the Showdown at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon will fit right in, so I will actually (*gasp*) make progress on the darn thing in the next week or two. Yippee!

Kaleidoscope (G to PG-13 | RL/NT | July of OotP through April of DH)
Remus Lupin has long believed that love is a luxury beyond his means. Nymphadora Tonks has been too busy proving herself as an Auror to pay any attention to romance. Their strong if unexpected friendship is a source of comfort in difficult times — until it threatens to turn into something more.

[A series in progress. Most recent additions: Taking Leave, And Yet So Far, and A Moth to a Flame.]

Part I: Colours (OotP)

Colours has been completed and revised. The final version is now posted here and at FanFiction.net.
  1. Angles of Perception (3505 words | PG)
[also at FF.N] [original LJ version ("Initiation")]
Tonks used to think that her life as an Auror was busy enough. Little did she know that one curry lunch with Kingsley Shacklebolt would get her involved with an underground organisation, her fugitive cousin, and a quiet man who, she suspects, might be a lot more interesting than he looks.
  2. The Lie of the Land (1605 words | PG)
[also at FF.N] [original LJ version at [livejournal.com profile] pulped_fictions]
Remus learns a few things about the newest Order member when he recruits her for a spot of pranking. It does occur to him to wonder what she might have learned, in turn.

  3. Marauding for the Cause (3920 words | PG)
       [also at FF.N]
An Order mission featuring Death Eaters, a banshee lamp, and high expectations all around.
  4. Stripes (2710 words | PG)
[also at FF.N] [original LJ version]
Sirius discovers that Tonks is unaware of something rather important about Remus, so he takes matters into his own hands.
  5. Moon by Moon (2800 words | PG)
[also at FF.N] [original LJ version at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon]
Last month, Sirius carefully explained to Tonks that Remus needs privacy after the full moon. But now somehow, something has started to change.

  6. The Things We Remember (4705 words | PG/mild profanity and Father Christmas spoilers)
[also at FF.N] [original LJ version at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon]
Sometimes, the hardest thing about Christmas is not the giving, but the receiving. Still, a carefully chosen Muggle gift just might be magical enough to set a little piece of the past right again.

  7. Words Unspoken (3240 words | PG-13/mild profanity, very mild innuendo)
       [also at FF.N]
Tonks is having a hard time balancing her daily life with all the secrets she must keep for the Order. Remus gives her some advice — but in doing so, he only makes the whole situation that much more complicated.

  8. Unforeseen Attachments (3690 words | PG/mild profanity)
[also at FF.N] [original LJ version at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon]
The Weasley twins apply their formidable research and development skills to the problem of Walburga Black's portrait, but things go wrong rather quickly. At least Tonks is there to save the day — only, now Remus is starting to notice just how many of her evenings she spends at Grimmauld Place.

  9. If a Seed be Sown (3460 words | PG/mild profanity)
[also at FF.N] [original LJ version ("Friends") at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon]
Tonks has almost given up hope that Remus will ever see her as more than a friend, until Sirius steps in to do what he can for his friends. But no one expects the evening to end the way it does.

  10. Gather Up the Fragments that Remain (3880 words | PG/grief and reference to character death)
       [also at FF.N]
After the Department of Mysteries, after Bellatrix, after the Veil, Remus tries to get things done, and tries not to think about what he has lost. Especially when the news he has to deliver to Tonks might cost him her friendship as well.
  11. Catching Hold (2490 words | PG/mild profanity, reference to character death)
[also at FF.N] [original LJ version at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon]
Tonks is afraid that Remus will disappear again, the way he did the first time he lost his best friends. But then he shows her something he's never shown anyone else, and she realises that there may be a way to hold on, after all.

  12. Blindsided (5590 words | PG/mild profanity)
[also at FF.N] [original LJ version]
Remus makes a terrifying discovery, but he really should have seen it coming. For her part, Tonks discovers just how much Remus intends to deny himself — and her.

Part II: Mirrors (HBP)

Mirrors is currently under revision for posting at FanFiction.net.
  1. Now Wait for the Tide to Turn (5205 words | PG-13/profanity)
       [also at FF.N]
Remus resolves to wait for as long as it takes until Tonks stops imagining herself in love with him. Tonks refuses to give up until Remus lets himself have the love he deserves. The irresistible force meets the immovable object, for the first of a million times.

  2. Colours Under the Moon (3090 words | PG/mild profanity)
       [also at FF.N]
The more Tonks learns about Remus's mission to infiltrate Greyback's pack, the more reasons she has to worry.

  3. If Battle Lines are Drawn (3440 words | PG/mild profanity)
       [also at FF.N]
At the first full meeting of the Order of the Phoenix after the fight at the Ministry, Molly keeps noticing things that are...different. [At [livejournal.com profile] rt_morelove.]

  4.  [new]  A Moth to a Flame (3950 words | PG/mild profanity)
       [also at FF.N]
In the weeks between losing Sirius and leaving for his mission with Greyback’s pack, Remus fights to hold on to his friendship with Tonks. But the hardest part of all is trying not to want more. [At [livejournal.com profile] rt_morelove.]

  5.  [new]  And Yet So Far (4840 words | PG/mild profanity)
       [also at FF.N]
What with missing Sirius, spending every day driving off dementors from Hogsmeade, and helping Remus get ready for an Order mission straight out of his worst nightmares, Tonks isn’t feeling very pink. Which may explain why it’s so hard to keep herself together as Remus lets her further in and pushes her further away, all at the same time.
  6.  [new]  Taking Leave (4950 words | PG/mild profanity)
       [also at FF.N]
Remus is cutting all his ties, steeling himself to leave the Order behind and join up with Greyback's pack. Tonks knows he has to leave, but that doesn't mean she is willing to give up.

  7. Out of Sight (3658 words | PG/mild profanity) — As Remus sets out to join Greyback's pack, memories of his friendship with Tonks are his anchor to sanity. But there are certain things that both of them simply must forget, and time spent apart will let them do that. ...Won't it? [At [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon.]

  8. Toil and Trouble
[Remus faces Greyback; Tonks faces Slughorn.]

  9. Subterfuge (3036 words | PG/mild violence) — Tonks answers a summons from Remus. It's the first she's seen him since he left to join Greyback's pack. But the request he makes of her is not what she was expecting. [At [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon.]

  10. [Lack of progress with the pack.]

  11. Sanctuary (3045 words | PG) — Tonks wasn't going to go to the Burrow on Christmas, until she got Molly's owl. [At [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon.]
    • This story is a reconceptualization of a drabble, entitled Waves, that was originally posted at [livejournal.com profile] rt_challenge.

  12. Reaction (3808 words | PG/reference to offstage violence) — After a bad full moon with the pack, Remus seeks temporary refuge at the Burrow, so Molly schemes to give him a little time with Tonks. Only, things do not go according to her plan. [At [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon.]

  13. What It Takes (4750 words | PG-13/profanity, reference to offstage violence) — Remus has been living with Greyback’s pack for months without making any tangible progress at all. Loving someone he can never have certainly does not improve matters. But one day, Greyback goes a little too far, and some things, at least, begin to change. [At [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon.]

  14. To See Clearly (4293 words | PG/mild profanity) — Remus risks his position in the pack, and maybe even his life, in a final attempt to stop Greyback's werewolves from aligning with the Death Eaters. And it seems he may be making another last, desperate stand as well. [At [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon.]

  15. Landslide (7600 words | PG-13/mild profanity, brief descriptions of violence, canon minor-character death) — Remus is so very certain that he is right to push Tonks away, no matter how much pain it causes both of them. And Tonks will never give up, not as long as she knows that Remus loves her. But the inevitable collision between the irresistible force and the immovable object takes an unexpected turn on the night the Death Eaters invade Hogwarts. [At [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon.]

Part III: Patterns (DH)
  1. One Step Forward (3510 words | PG) — Remus goes to have dinner with Tonks, still fighting second thoughts.
  2. Clearing the Table (2914 words | PG) — Andromeda had always hoped that Nymphadora would bring someone special home for dinner someday, but when that day comes, her daughter’s choice of guest is quite a shock.
  3. [The Wolfsbane discussion, and other adjustments.]

  4. Asking for Forever (5020 words | PG-13/mild profanity, cuddling) — A mere fortnight month after the relationship finally begins is hardly the best time to ask a certain question. But what if it's now or never? [At [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon.]
    • Canon timeline error: This story should be taking place one month after Dumbledore's death, not two weeks; please make the necessary mental edits when reading.

  5. Promises (3770 words | PG) — Arthur is a witness: to Tonks being determined to outwit Dolores Umbridge just this once, and to Remus being torn between worry, guilt, and sheer joy. Oh, and to a wedding.

  6. Crossing the Threshold (3581 words | PG-13/mild profanity, intimate situations) — A proposal in the morning, a marriage in the afternoon; everything has happened so fast that Remus doesn't quite know what to expect on his wedding night.

  7. Need (1079 words | PG-13/profanity, implied intimacy) — In the aftermath of a narrow escape, love surfaces as anger, relief becomes need, and desperation leads to carelessness...with far-reaching consequences. [At [livejournal.com profile] rt_challenge.]

  8. [Things go from bad to worse.]

  9. Breaking Point (2821 words | PG-13/torture, mild profanity) — In the dark hours after the attack on Bill and Fleur's wedding, Andromeda begins to think a little better of her own new son-in-law. But even an Order veteran who can stand up to a Death Eater's Cruciatus Curse has his limits.

  10. All That I Am (6422 words | PG-13/mild profanity, intimate situations) — Remus makes the choice to go home again, but now he must convince Tonks that he is home for good. What can he possibly say this time, if even wedding vows were not enough? [At [livejournal.com profile] rt_challenge.]

  11. Moving Forward (2847 words | PG-13) — Remus has come home, but Tonks needs to work out how they can fit themselves together again. [Note: Major revisions are planned for this one, to make it more of a plotty adventure, and to put off some of the emotional confrontation until the following chapter. So at the moment, this installment and the next are a little redundant, character-development-wise, but that will change.]

  12. Any Road Runs Two Ways (4610 words | PG-13/intimate situations, mild profanity) — Remus would do anything to keep the full moon from being a burden on Tonks. But there is such a thing as going too far.

  13. [Potterwatch.]

  14. Messages (3835 words | PG/mild profanity) — Tonks has a lot to worry about as Christmas approaches: her decreasing usefulness as an undercover agent, her father's fate as a Muggle-born wizard on the run, and the fact that her parents and her husband still don't seem to understand each other. [At [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon.]

  15. [Ted.]

  16. Porridge (2638 words | PG) — Andromeda finds that the loss of her husband and the imminent arrival of her grandson have changed the way she views her son-in-law. But she has built her share of the walls between them, and it may be too late for her to pull them down.

  17. [Teddy: The last chapter — but not the End.]

Happily ever after?

The series Warp and Weft is an AU sequel to Kaleidoscope that begins with By a Thread (~7800 words | PG).

Okay, I'm sort of blocked on my next fic for the current Jumble at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon.

I suspected I would have a harder time with this one, since I usually write character studies (or one- or two-chapter fics where whatever plot I manage to write is really just an excuse for some poor hapless characters to undergo an experience of my choosing so I can watch them deal with it). For this Jumble, I swore up and down that if I got action/adventure for my genre prompt, I would go for it, because I want to learn to handle more genres.

Well, I did get a/a. Trouble is, days have gone by and I'm still at the point of choreographing various scenarios in my head, waiting for that feeling of "aha, there's the plotbunny I'm going to follow." Nothing I've thought of so far feels like it's something that wants me to write it.

I've already had a look at the a/a writing discussion at [livejournal.com profile] metamorfic_moon. That was extremely helpful, especially the suggestions by [livejournal.com profile] jesspallas, whose a/a fics Oblivious and Imperius are some of my favorite long fics ever. So I've got some technical ideas I'm dying to try, but NO PLOT.

Here are some ideas I've been pushing around. Any opinions? Does anything stand out as something you think you'd like to read?

Summary: A young mother is shocked to discover that someone has found her name through the Werewolf Registry.

This snippet began life as a rather awkward drabble on the Sugar Quill's drabble thread, but 300 words was not enough for this idea, so I'm posting a ficlet version here (581 words).
