As busy as work has been over the last couple of months, I did actually manage to write a drabble and a short fic for the Winterfair exchange event at [livejournal.com profile] bujold_fic. And these may be short, but they were challenging for me! The first is a non-subtle comedy piece, and the second is about characters I hadn't ever thought I would write -- it even includes two or three paragraphs of action scene, if you can believe that. :)
  • Kicking and Screaming (550 words | PG | gen | A Civil Campaign)
Ivan has a secret, and Gregor has found it out. [Prompt by [livejournal.com profile] zortified.]

This fic was translated into Russian by [livejournal.com profile] jetta_e_rus, as Крича и пинаясь.

  • Bitter Fruit and Sweet
(2000 words | PG-13/oblique reference to abuse | gen | AU for The Warrior's Apprentice)
Bothari and Elena Visconti, AU [spoiler] where Bothari survives. [Prompt by [livejournal.com profile] volynskaja.]

Fanart for the same prompt was posted by telico and Лоз Конгрейв.

  • ETA: I really didn't think I was going to do another one, but it happened just now...
    Keeping Score
    (530 words | PG | gen | after A Civil Campaign)
Laisa meets Cavilo. [Prompt by [livejournal.com profile] hedda62.]
The Winterfair masterlist, with fics in English and Russian, is here.

I'm reading Cordelia's Honor now! Am in the middle of the scene where Aral proposed but then decided to tell Cordelia all the reasons she shouldn't marry him, lol. You don't have a type for your ships now, do you? ;)

I think I've always had that type for my ships. ;)

I'm glad you're still reading! :) I know there's a certain amount of space-battle-type stuff in the first half of Cordelia's Honor, and I wasn't sure if that would put you off. But I absolutely love the way the relationship between Aral and Cordelia develops. That line about "When had she stopped being afraid of him and started being afraid for him?" -- guh. And the second half of CH is a lot more about societies and politics and culture clash.

We-ell...I do have to admit that while I'm enjoying the characters I'm not really finding the plot to be much of a page-turner at the moment. My attention has easily been swayed from it for the past two days by Hunger Games fanfic, lol. But I am curious enough about the characters to keep going so hopefully I'll pick up the pace soon!

I guess it is a little like if we'd been watching Caz and Palli at Gotorget, instead of only hearing about it afterward! Heh.

If you hang in there, you're just about to see Cordelia kicking some serious butt. And not long after that you get to meet Simon Illyan, who eventually gets an awesome ship oh, about 30 years in the future. ;)

Hah! Actual action does tend to make my eyes gloss over...which I think is one of my complaints in my review of the Orson Scott Card books! What does that say about me as a sci-fi/fantasty fan??
