I'm not sure what deep meaning this might have, but Sirius keeps turning up in my SQ drabbles. Here are the newest ones:
  • prompt = run -- Vernon's unexpected news makes Petunia remember Sirius. (PoA>GoF)

  • prompt = gold -- Sirius may be a desperate fugitive, but at least he's a desperate fugitive with a large bank account. (POA)

Enjoyed both of these, especially the first one. Really liked how Petunia was polishing the silverware and that staring at her upside-down reflection didn't bring to mind a murderer at the mention of Black but, instead, James and his friends who, even in her mind, didn't quite make it as far as being criminals. There also seemed a hint of fondness in the memories of Lily for a second before she brought herself back to reality.

Just to go off at a slight tangent for a sec, do you think the "awful boy" was James? Or could it be Snape? I keep reading this theory and wondering... ;)

In the second one, I love the image of Crookshanks trekking through the snow carrying the parchment and quill for Sirius. Part of me would love to know what name Sirius used to sign it, as I'm sure it would have been most apt, lol. It's a touching reminder of what Sirius would do and suffer for Harry.

Both really nicely done. Thanks for posting them here as I'm an infrequent visitor at the SQ and would have missed them. :)

Thanks for the comments; glad to hear you liked the drabbles! I am so curious about just how well Petunia knew Lily's friends. There's no sign that she knew the name Sirius Black when she heard it on the news. And she didn't seem to recognize Remus at the station in OotP, but maybe she was deliberately ignoring him, or maybe Harry just wasn't watching at the right moment.

Yep, I really wonder about that too. I feel like James is the simplest, most likely interpretation, and I've used that in a fic or two. But JKR loves her red herrings, and there's no denying that Harry responds to Petunia's that awful boy remark with something like, "If you mean my mum and dad, why don't you say their names!" -- to which no one responds, leaving the reader to assume Harry's right, in classic red-herring style.

I'm pretty sure we're going to find out that Snape loved Lily, and that's why Dumbledore trusted him. I don't think Lily loved him back, but she might have been his friend. And here's something I'd love to see in DH:

HARRY: Dumbledore? He's dead! Snape killed him! *snarls*
PETUNIA: Snape...? You mean Severus? *querulously* Severus killed someone?
HARRY: ...!!!

It does indeed seem like a well set-up red herring and everything seems to point to Snape having had feelings for Lily - I'm presuming this was why Voldemort didn't really want to kill her - so, yep, I think I've signed up for that one. Besides, there's surely got to be big revelations about Lily in DH; we've spent six books reading Harry only interested in his Dad, and everyone else only interested in discussing him...

If that scene appears, I'll tell everyone you're better than Trelawney! It would be a classic moment and I'm sure it would result in Capslock!Harry for about the next six chapters. ;)
