Warning: Self-indulgent postwar AU fluff ahead. ;)

This ficlet was inspired by some information recently released on Pottermore, to the effect that Remus's Patronus was a wolf, and he found this distressing, generally choosing to cast a non-corporeal Patronus instead. But I've also been editing and reposting (and even working on writing new) angsty Kaleidoscope fic for weeks now. So, either way -- high time for some fluff! (Set in the Warp and Weft AU ficverse.) [ETA: And I first wrote this before I found the other bit from Pottermore where it clearly states that Tonks's Patronus is a wolf, not a werewolf, so I've now given it a bit of a rewrite.]

Expecto Patronum (1145 words | PG | AU/September 2011)
Remus and Tonks have dinner at the Potters' after seeing Teddy off on the Hogwarts Express. James and Al are full of questions, including one that not even Harry knows the answer to.

Expecto Patronum
1 September, 2011

When Remus stepped out of the Floo into the kitchen at number twelve, Grimmauld Place, a small red-headed tornado barrelled into him and latched onto his knees.

“Remus! Remus!”

“Hello, Lily Luna!” He detached her, laughing, and scooped her up in his arms instead. “Let’s get out of the way before—”

“Oof!” Dora came spinning through the green flames and smacked right into them from behind.

Lily started giggling. Remus automatically shifted her to one hip and turned to steady his wife with the other arm, giving her a subtle little squeeze around the waist and earning a smile in return.

“Hullo!” Ginny called from across the kitchen, where she was Charming chocolate frosting onto a tall cake with jam between the layers.

“That was quite the entrance.” Harry, grinning broadly, came over to clap Remus on the back and give Dora a kiss on the cheek. “Teddy off all right on the Hogwarts Express?”

Footsteps clattered down the stairs, and James appeared. “Hi, Remus! Hi, Tonks! Here, hold this!” He thrust a small Muggle fire-truck toy into Dora’s hand and darted to the other side of the room, evincing deep interest in Ginny and the cake.

Al made his own noisy entrance, looking thoroughly disgruntled. “James, I know you’ve got it—oh!” He slid to a stop in front of Dora. “James gave you that, just now. Didn’t he!”

Dora raised an eyebrow and handed over the fire truck. “Allow me to return your property.”

“James,” said Harry, with only the slightest edge to his voice.

“Al wasn’t using it.” James was the picture of innocence.

“You ask before you play with something that isn’t yours,” said Ginny firmly. “Now, both of you, come and set the table.”

They all settled into their usual places around one end of the long kitchen table that used to hold the whole Order of the Phoenix—and still did sometimes, for holiday parties.

“Mum said to thank you for the invitation,” said Dora, “but her mahjong club meets tonight, so she went straight home from King’s Cross.”

“I suppose Teddy made the train?” Ginny’s smile was impish. “Unlike some people.”

“Hey,” Harry grinned. “That was my second year.”

“Teddy is in third year this year.” James, who at six years old was fascinated by all things Hogwarts—and all things Teddy—obviously felt compelled to clarify.

Remus found himself glancing at Harry, only to catch Harry looking back at him. They shared a quick smile.

My third year,” said Harry, in his best storytelling voice, “was when I first met Remus.”

That hadn’t really been the first time, of course, and Remus felt the familiar pang of regret for missing Harry’s childhood that would never entirely fade. But Harry’s own expression held nothing but fond reminiscence. And Harry was Teddy’s godfather, and he and Dora were godparents to Lily. They were all as good as family, now.

“That was when you taught Defence Against the Dark Arts, right?” James gazed at Remus from across the table. “And you taught Dad to cast a Patronus!”

“That’s right,” said Remus, more than a little amused at finding himself part of James’s Hogwarts-lore.

“Dad’s Patronus is a stag,” James recited. “Like what Grandpa James turned into.”

“Could I please have some more potatoes, Tonks?” asked Al. “And Remus, what’s your Patronus? Dad never said.”

“Al,” said Harry, carefully, with a worried glance in Remus’s direction, “it’s really not polite to ask about someone’s Patronus.”

“But, Dad, Remus knows what yours is—”

“It’s fine, Harry,” said Remus. He set down his fork and pulled out his wand, smiling at the little boy who looked more like Prongs than Prongs’s own namesake did. “Watch carefully, Al. Expecto Patronum.” It still astonished him, sometimes, how easy it was to conjure a Patronus these days. “Can you tell what it is?”

“Wolf!” said Lily, gleefully.

It floated over to her and sniffed at her hair. She giggled and tried to pet it.

“Or, is it a werewolf?” asked Al, leaning over to see it better. The Potter children all knew about Remus’s condition, of course, but they took their cues from Harry and Ginny and treated it as an ordinary part of life. Thanks to the Wolfsbane potion, and the gradual repeal of most of the restrictive laws, that was actually closer to the truth than Remus had ever expected it to be.

“Do you know how to tell the difference between a wolf and a werewolf?” he asked.

Al shook his head. James did, too.

“The most obvious difference,” Remus explained, falling easily into teaching mode, “is that a werewolf has a tuft on the end of its tail. What have we got here?”

“I can’t get a good look.” Al frowned. The Patronus had ducked under the table, investigating crumbs.

“Let’s have another one, then.” Remus smiled a little. “Dora, would you mind?”

Expecto Patronum,” she said, amiably, before spearing another sprout.

The first silver wolf came out from under the table as soon as the second one appeared. The two sniffed noses, and then the tails began to wag, great soft plumes.

“A tuft is what a lion’s tail has, isn’t it?” said Al. “So these are wolves, not werewolves.”

“Well done,” said Remus. Al was as sharp as James, even if he wasn’t quite as boastful about it. “In any case, a Patronus always takes the shape of a true animal, and a werewolf isn’t exactly an animal.”

By now, the wolves were play-wrestling a bit in the middle of the kitchen, and Remus had lost track of which was which. One of them gave a silent yip before they dissolved into silver mist and faded away.

Grinning at the wolves’ antics, Remus took a sip of wine. But when he set his goblet down, he saw that Harry was gaping at him.

“What’s the matter?”

“Nothing,” said Harry, hastily. “Only—Molly told me once that she’d never seen you cast a corporeal Patronus. I’d always thought that was odd, since you taught me how.”

“Ah,” said Remus. Dora’s hand found his, under the table. “Molly would have seen my Patronus during the war. At that point, I still had—” Dora squeezed his hand, and he squeezed back—“rather uncomfortable associations with the form it takes, you see. So I would usually just cast a non-corporeal one and have done with it.”

“It’s true that your Patronus is a little ironic,” said Ginny, with an eyebrow raised.

“Maybe,” said Dora. “But mine thinks his is cute.”

The smile his wife gave him warmed Remus all through.

“I want to learn the Patronus Charm,” James announced. “Will you teach me, Remus? Like you taught Dad?”

“Ask me again when you are a third year at Hogwarts,” said Remus with a grin, “and we’ll see.”

“Now,” said Ginny, “who would like some cake?”

I can't begin to tell you how glad I was when I saw this on my flist today :DDD
Just what I needed!

I read this this morning instead of going for a run (well, it was raining...).

Anyway, it was a lovely little fic to wake up to - a lovely moment of happiness. :)

I HAVE BEEN DYING FOR SOME R/T FIC SINCE WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND THIS WAS THE TICKET. SO CUTE. I love how Remus has come around to accepting Things Wolfish.

(Also did you see that Tonks' original Patronus was revealed to be a jack rabbit?)

I definitely needed something like this, myself.

Yes! That was exactly what I wanted to show here -- he's so happy and comfortable in his life now, truly secure in the idea that his family (and his extended family) love him for himself, that the Patronus thing just doesn't matter to him at all anymore.

(Also did you see that Tonks' original Patronus was revealed to be a jack rabbit?)

Oh, no! I finally committed her to having a dolphin, in the Kaleidoscope chapter I only just archived on FF.N. Hmmph. It's a minor detail; I could change it. But I like her with a dolphin...

I can't believe I'm saying this given how far behind I've fallen with your fantastic Downton ficverse(s) -- so completely feel free to disregard. But if you're looking for upbeat R/T fic to counteract certain recent events, lol, there was a little drabble I posted at rt_challenge a million years ago where Tonks had just pranked some Death Eater. Lots of people at the time were encouraging me to expand the story and write the actual prank part. So, I finally did. (http://shimotsuki.livejournal.com/99883.html)

Oh R/T fanfiction, I have so missed you.

A beautiful rendition of a life that may have been! After Wednesday all the Remus fans had a nostalgic bent I think.

I love this, and now all I need is Remus and Lyall Lupin fanfiction and my life would probably be complete.

LOL, I see the whistles got put to one side for a little while. ;)

Just what was needed! It still astonished him, sometimes, how easy it was to conjure a Patronus these days. Aww, I love how this ties in with the 'dazed by his own happiness' line, and that it's only sometimes, nowadays, that he remembers to be astonished. I don't suppose he will ever quite take it for granted. :)

Way to totally redeem anything in Pottermore canon that we might have just wanted to carp about!

A beautiful rendition of a life that may have been!

Aww, thanks. I think they had so much postwar potential for good storytelling. Which I will now help myself to. ;)

After Wednesday all the Remus fans had a nostalgic bent I think.

It did seem to stir up the action on LJ, for a change!

and now all I need is Remus and Lyall Lupin fanfiction and my life would probably be complete.

Heh -- that would be fun. I hope someone rises to the challenge.

Ironically, I've been working on a couple of totally new Kaleidoscope chapters, but they have to do with Remus's history with Greyback, and this new bio is going to make me have to rethink all that and may actually delay my posting them, heh...Can't decide how compatible to keep with stuff like this that comes from JKR but isn't really canon.

Thanks for reading this little drabble, though! It was fun to write something fluffy for a change.

I probably really shouldn't have brought that up -- I'm sure I broke all kinds of fanfic etiquette! LOL. (It's just that you mentioned you'd been looking, and as far as I can tell there's hardly anyone out there still writing new R/T at this point...)

Of course, the pigtronus! How could I forget! Hee. (Also: Perfect icon -- always loved that one of yours.)

Of course you did not break any fanfic etiquette! I'm just on my way to bed so I shall make it my bedtime read. :D

Well, making whistles requires playing them to check how they're doing, and at some point, the parentals go to bed and we have to stop making noise. ;)

Trust you to pick out my favorite line in the whole fic! :) I love to think of a happy postwar Remus never quite taking things for granted, because that means he never forgets to remember that things are good for him at last.

Yeah, that whole section in the Lupin bio with the heading "Death"? No idea where that came from. The only reason we didn't see Remus and Tonks in the DH Epilogue is that since Teddy was finished at Hogwarts, they had no reason to be at King's Cross. Duh.

I don't make it to LJ very often but I seemed to have timed this visit perfectly with the awesome bio and new fanfiction! Ater reading this one, I have a feeling I'm in for a late night of catching up. TGIF! Who knows. It may even inspire me to do some R /T art.

This is definitely the week for Remus-related action on LJ. Would be nice if it spawned a little new fic AND ART YES PLEASE DO. :)

And, thanks. It's such an addiction, writing fluffy AU...normal is newsworthy, for these two. :) And yep, Remus and Tonks totally got to eat the cake. Hi yourself!

When the R/T community fell off and the few Downton Abbey journals I could tolerate became intolerable, I pretty much retreated to Facebook. Sad, I know. I tried Twitter but had nothing to say to people I didn't know, and Tumbler but found it difficult to relate to over-emotional 20 year olds. Coming back tonight and reading through posts by Gilpin and MrsTater and yourself, have felt like coming home to a family reunion. I can't say that I'll start posting stuff again but I will keep closer tabs on my flist in case this R/T resurgence continues.

Real life is good. Recently turned 50. Just finished a run of The King and I (in the Pit, not on stage). Have four 6 week old kittens running about to entertain me and looking forward to DA 4 next month. Hoping for some good Anna/Bates story lines this year but I know Mary and Branson will probably dominate.

There is so much potential in post war and I love your taking advantage of it. I read all of your warp and weft series last night and was very inspiring. So much so I did my first fanfiction in months.

I think new information is always a wonderful reason to get back into fandom especially when the author tells us herself . I think it's a way of her saying I'm sorry there's not more on all of these characters bit here is information I know you will treasure.

It appears that I took up my own challenge after all and did sone writing. Who knows, I might write some more =)

This whole biography thing made me surprisingly emotional. For several reasons.
So this was just perfect :-)

I love that Remus finds it so easy to cast a Patronus Charm now! That says so much about how his life is (is, not should have been, heh *whistles innocently*). And I love the small, but important signs of love and affection Remus and Tonks keep sending each other.

(Maybe this would be good timing for another R/T meme...? ;))

Ha, you've summed up my difficulties with both in one line. It's easy to talk (at length;)) on LJ; Tumblr seems mostly about the 'feels' rather than the words, and Twitter about using fewer words more often. Neither appeal very much which leaves me sticking around here, head no doubt firmly in the sand. Hope you will, too - it's not long till Downton's back!

And I love the small, but important signs of love and affection Remus and Tonks keep sending each other.

I like to think that the strong friendship they've developed (which is now bio-canon :D ) would be an excellent foundation for a strong and, ahem, long-lasting marriage.

When the R/T community fell off and the few Downton Abbey journals I could tolerate became intolerable, I pretty much retreated to Facebook. Sad, I know.

Naw, totally understandable -- my LJ time has dropped way down now that the f-list has gone so quiet. I can't get excited about Tumblr either -- and unlike you, apparently, I even hate Facebook and feel like I can't figure it out. So here I sit on quiet LJ and miss the Olden Days of, you know, three or four years ago. ;)

Real life is good. Recently turned 50. Just finished a run of The King and I (in the Pit, not on stage). Have four 6 week old kittens running about to entertain me and looking forward to DA 4 next month.

Glad to hear things are going well! I miss the photos of your DIY projects. Living vicariously, and all that.

Hoping for some good Anna/Bates story lines this year but I know Mary and Branson will probably dominate.

There is potential for some great Bates vs. Thomas plotting, though...I'm glad we didn't lose Thomas along with the other non-renewals.

You know. PVC pipes make excellent percussion instruments in case your flutes don't work out.

That's good to know, lol. But the whistles are surprisingly successful! We debuted them today at a "slow session" (a tune-teaching-oriented trad session). (And we're working with 1/2-inch PVC, which might be too small for percussion.)

I love how you wrote that Remus would finally be able to be comfortable with his patronus, though I suppose years of a happy marriage would do that to a guy. But I think he would be, proud of it after all, especially for what it means.

I always like the fact that Tonks had a werewolf patronus, but I learned that it is a wolf, like Remus, and apart of me is sad about that. The jack rabbit part was cool, but I always saw her original one as a chameleon.

Anyway, headcanons are more fun anyway.

Oh, I hope so. Remus so totally deserves years of a happy marriage, with a son who looks up to him, and lots of Potter and Weasley kids who think he's cool and are drawn to him for his kindness. Also years of Molly and Andromeda looking after him, and well-earned respect from people like McGonagall and Kingsley, and finally having a chance to build a relationship with Harry, and, yeah. Go AU! ;)

I always like the fact that Tonks had a werewolf patronus, but I learned that it is a wolf, like Remus, and apart of me is sad about that.

I always thought it was a werewolf, too, but I guess a wolf makes more sense, given that a werewolf isn't really an animal. (I rewrote a few lines of this story today to fix Tonks's Patronus...)

The jack rabbit part was cool, but I always saw her original one as a chameleon.

A chameleon is a great choice for Tonks. I had given her a dolphin, since it's cheerful and sometimes they are said to save people, heh. But a jack rabbit isn't bad. (I just hope JKR doesn't tell us Poppy Pomfrey's, because I've given her a St. Bernard and I really like that!)

Anyway, headcanons are more fun anyway.

That is so true!

Thanks for reading. :)
