I really love Remus and Tonks, and you describe them beautifully.
And OF COURSE this is how the battle at Hogwarts ends for them!!! As you say, there's nothing here that contradicts canon. So as far as I am concerned, this is how it turned out:)
I really don't get JKR on this point - Remus Lupin is (among other things) about hope for people with illness or other major problems, about have you can be strong and graceful despite of your problems - and you DO NOT kill that!
Your version is definitely MUCH better, and with the mirrors and the other details, I think it is very true to the HP world.
