I’ve read enough Remus stories to have become a bit bored with stories in which it’s taken for granted that Remus is a Defence specialist, or a teacher – and hardly anything else (that he’s actually worked in that field all through the lost years, even though he says in canon that he couldn’t get paid employment).
I see what you mean!
I actually have Remus start off working in Magizoology after Hogwarts, but he loses that job and then things go quickly downhill from there, since he can seldom provide references from a previous job when he applies for another. I haven't yet decided what my version of Remus was doing between 1981 and PoA, except that he was traveling, but I think it was a lot of odd jobs, certainly low-paying, and probably also tedious. Which is why he also, on his own time, continued with independent magizoology research whenever he could, even if he had to submit his articles anonymously as we see here.
I’d very much like to read that story which features the Institute of Magizoology.
I didn't explain it very well, I'm afraid; it's actually a story about the aftermath of Remus losing that job. And it's one that I should revise someday, because I wish I'd had Remus explain to Lily (who is the narrator) more about why losing the job hits him as hard as it does. But in case you're still interested after all these disclaimers, the story is Letting It Matter (http://shimotsuki.livejournal.com/6844.html)...
the chances of my more unusual extrapolations to convince and interest someone
Ah, but one of the things I like the most about fanfic is to see all the different, original ideas that people come up for the backgrounds of the characters that we love!
